. . . just a small town in South Georgia that grew the best kids ever raised!!

Who's This Frazzled Woman?

It’s been a “tear my hair out, want to scream, want to throw the computer time" the last few weeks … but with my desktop and my laptop computers now out of Computerville Hospital, and after loading them back up with all the needed software programs ... programs which worked before the breakdown – it took a while to get it all done; and after working most of Saturday … copying and pasting a good deal of the material from all the emails I had received in the last month into a working "word document" – I realized the document, which had once been there ... was GONE … closed without warning ... no back up ... no nothing. The work I had done had completely disappeared. Prepared for starting over ...

Please understand ... I'm no novice at computering (and I make up words)! But this time my sanity was tested .... BIG TIME!

So Sunday I started over, deleting and then reloading the needed software programs and TESTING the programs thoroughly before starting again! This time it has worked. Hopefully things have settled down … but if in the confusion, something you sent was omitted, please let me know – it is no big deal to ADD! And I'm always glad to do that!

In the meantime – I must thank all the Indians for the many encouraging emails! Made me smile in spite of the situation! Especially meaningful was a wonderful presentation (below) sent by Susan Riffe O’Neal (’54 - whose family moved from Albany her freshman year).

Enjoy as I did: All Aboard! Listen to the great country pianist Floyd Cramer playing Vaya con Dios, and while listening, watch a beautiful slide show of magnificent train pictures with meaningful written comments. For me, this was a balm!

*** Hey 1983!***

Some of your Classmates are asking about a reunion this year????Anyone have info we can post in the UPCOMING REUNIONS?

*** Are there additional upcoming reunions?

Submit your information to:

 YOU ASKED… ? ? ?

?~ Could our reunion notice be added to the newsletter? I am also sending a list of the deceased in our class. Thanks for all that you do!

~ Amy Robertson Beaver (’68)

A ~ Absolutely!

?~ I just read through the Albany High Times Sponsors for 2012 - 2013 and saw my cousin, Troy Strickland, Class of 1954, listed there. Also found reference to his brother, Ed Strickland, Class of 1956. They were grown and gone by the time I graduated and Caroline and I lost track of them soon after that. If you have email or contact information on both or either, could you let me know so that I can re-establish contact? Appreciate any help you can give me.

~ Eloise King Newton, Class of 1961

A ~ I don't usually give out email addresses without approval - but "kin"? I do!

R ~ Thanks so much for your help in finding both of them!

~ Eloise

?~ Does anyone have any information on Catherine Dismuke ('48)? She and I played flute in the AHS band together. I have always wondered what happened to her.

~ Ralph Calhoun, Class of 1947

?~ I happened upon this web site when searching for news of a junior high and college friend, Charles Rainey. I was saddened to see he had passed away and also noted that dear Dottie Bunch and my good pal Johnny Petrecca had also died. Other names on the Class of 62 list I recognized as middle school classmates were Butch Hamlin and Leonard Odum, two guys who had terrorized me "back in the day".

I moved away from Albany before High School years, but would love to know any information you may have for Jeanna Stewart, also Class of '62. We were neighbors and classmates in Miss Mary Frances McNeil's6th grade class at Magnolia Elementary during the '55 and '56 class year.
If you can't help me, I salute the web master of a nice job with this web site. Sincerely,
~ Jim K. Faircloth

Sam Lee (’78) Submits Lists for

Deceased “Kids of the 70’s”

In Memoriam - Our Deceased Classmates - AHS Albany GA

There is no way the Albany High Times has the ability to publish lists of deceased or missing classmates, unless those lists are submitted. Sam Lee (’78), Senior Admin, Albany GA Kids of the 70’s, saw there were no listings for the 70’s, and so, through his FaceBook “Kids of the 70’s”, he began to compile lists. It was a labor of love and NOW … where there was nothing representing that era, all 10 years from the 70’s plus 4 years from the 80’s are listed. Some that are listed did not include maiden names.

Folks that move away from Albany often don't know their female classmates by their "married names", and often, Indian maidens do not use their maiden names. Jane Doe may not mean a thing to most classmates; but Jane SMITH Doe … DOES!

So if anyone recognizes a classmate on the lists by their married names, please let us know the maiden name!

Also, if you have any Indians to add … please email toalbanyhightimes@aol.com

Sam also included his sister, Jan Lee, from The Class of 1968. At the time, there was no list for that class. Within the week, a list came in from Amy Robertson Beaver of deceased 1968 classmates, and Jan was on that list! Cheers for a plan that came together!

NOTE: The Classes of 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, and 1969 have not submitted a list of deceased classmates and are not represented on "In Memoriam".

Jane Bass Culpepper

~ Conservationist ~

Submitted by Evelyn Butler Clifton

Jane Bass Culpepper, Class of 1950, who beginning in 2004, developed a butterfly garden in Palm Coast, Flagler County, FL. Lamar (Clifton)and I saw her work several years ago on a visit down there. She has been named Conservationist of the Year in Flagler County, and also does volunteer work in Volusia County.

A whole section of the Flagler County Library has been designated theJane Culpepper butterfly section. She has donated her extensive collection of books on the subject, as well as newsletters, etc. to the library.

Jane was a classmate of mine! We are so proud of Jane and all that she has done to “save the natural environment”, and to save the sea turtle nests, etc. in her community.

She is a special lady.

Watch Out for Worms, Bugs, Lions, Tigers and Bears ...

As Well As Viruses!

Submitted by Tom Herrington (’56)

Far too many of us have, from time to time, noticed that our computer was acting differently, or we have had someone ask us if we actually sent the Email that they received from us ....

I am not a computer "Geek", but I do know that there is always the threat of "Malware" out there waiting to attack my machine.

What is "Malware"? Here is a primer of sorts:

What can you do about the problem? Well, it seems that just having a "virus" protection program on your computer is not good enough to stop all attacks. There are worms, bugs, lions, tigers and bears out there as well as viruses.

The first defense is YOU, the user. If you get an Email from anybody that you do not know, you should open that only at your own risk; and if you do open it, and click on any links that might be there, then there is an excellent chance you just fell into the trap that was set for you.

Here is a link that I found that allows me to download a free program from Microsoft, which probably needs to be run from time to time to check that your virus program did not miss anything. I use "Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2012" to "protect" my machine. It seems to catch a lot of interlopers, but when I ran the one provided below, I found that I did indeed have a "bug" hidden deep within my registry, and it got removed -

Click here: Free Malware Removal Tool | Anti-Malware Scan Software

From what I understand, you might want to re-download the above tool from time to time to make sure you have the latest version to stop the latest designed threats...

There is also a commercially sold program which might be helpful, which seems to be one of the first out there to attack such things. It has both a free and a "Pro" version -

Click here: Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it pr

I was asked if another site that I often use had any programs or help as regards computer security, and yes, it does, but too much, and too varied to discuss here. I am a paid subscriber, so I can research a bit deeper than those who look for free, but even the free version has a lot of downloads that might be of interest to you -

Another site for downloads I use a lot, because of the ever developing number of programs out there -

As I said, I am no Geek, and I have been hit from time to time with things I could not understand....

My number one rule is that if any of you send me an Email, which contains only a link, and no description from you personally (not just a message that was forwarded from somebody else), I will immediately delete it without opening, downloading, or clicking on anything.

One other thing, it is also a good idea to change your password from time to time to stop those who might have snuck into the recesses of your machine ...

*** Vietnam Wall ***

Someone spent a lot of time and effort to create this website. It should be very helpful if you've ever wondered about someone from AHS, who might have served in the Vietnam War ... and don't know any contacts for them.

The link below is a virtual wall of all those lost during the Vietnam Warwith the names, bios and other information on our lost heroes. Those who remember that time frame, or who, perhaps, lost friends or family, can look them up on this site.

Click on the link. Click here: Names of Vietnam War casualties by city and state www.VirtualWall.org

When it opens, first click on a state. Scroll down to the city, and the names will appear. Click on the name and it will give details of the death. It should show you a picture of the person, or at least their bio and medals. I hope you don't find a name for which you weren't already aware.

Peace, love and joy,

Sara Joiner Eubanks (’61)

*** If you receive emails you would like to forward, but they are a formatting mess ... then you will love this "tool". It will remove all the >>>> markings, and ALSO take out "hard returns" - (people who don't use the wrap-a-round feature for typing and instead insert HARD RETURNS). Honest! This will make a beautiful document in 99 out of 100 instances. Download this program: http://www.papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm

 AHS Class Websites

One of the best AHS class websites was one  designed by Bill Satterfield and created by his son Joel. They were the webmaster (together).Charles Gillespie maintained the Announcements page The Planning Committee will decide whether we create a new website or not. Feedback from classmates that enjoyed the website might help sway their decision.

*** I am not sure if you have been made aware of the issue with AHS62 website. It is no longer a good site.

I double checked with Charles Gillespie and indeed the site has been hacked and not sure if or when another one will be forthcoming. I was just on the AHS News and Clues and see that it is still listed, so thought you might like to know about this issue. Also if you need any further information, Charles can be of help.

Thanks for your continued service given to the great ASH site. I was recently in Albany for a visit and was nice to see the area again!! :)”

~ Bobbie Young Wade('62)

NOTE: 1962 website listings have been removed.

*** Turn up your speakers, close your eyes, and think ... 1955.... Radium Springs Casino.... Ray Ragsdale ('57), Bill Garrison ('56), Terry Coleman ('56) and me ... Bob Duggleby ('56) ... the group known as THE BARON'S!

What a great time we had and what a great era to grow up in. Ray and I used to argue over who would sing the lead for "Earth Angel". I won, but today he laughs and holds it over my head that I can no longer reach the high notes. He says that his voice range is three octaves. I believe it. His voice today is better than it ever was.

*** Saw your web site. It is awesome, and brought back some memories. I attended Broad Elementary around 1948 to 1950. I am trying to get the exact dates. We lived on Oglethorpe Ave and I remember going out our front door and going to the back of our house and crossing an alley and there was the school. There used to be a store called Mr. Mac's nearby! Was wondering if anyone would have some old pics around this time frame? Sincerely

*** I got a new computer and I just found that your email was not transferred to my new address book. Can you send it to me again?

Also you told someone that you would send Betty Ann Brown'sdaughter her email in case the daughter wants to email her. Could you also send my email to Betty Ann's daughter. I was at the 40th 1947 Class Reunion and remember Betty Ann's being there. I also learned that she lived in Anderson, SC, and we went by there when we went down I-85 when we went to Georgia. Back then there was no Albany High Times to let you know where your classmates lived.

Betty Ann was one of my friends in high school and I will always remember how funny she could be. It was not long after the 49th reunion that she died.

I received a report of the death of Kenneth Gainous who died March 16, 2011. His wife, Connie Guarro Gainous (AHS Class of 1963), reported his passing to me as a result of receiving the invitation to the fiftieth reunion.

Also, Janie Eatman Williams died of liver cancer. This was reported by her ex-husband, Edward Derks (Class of 1963). Skip Porterfieldreports that William Brantley Edwards died of cancer in 2004, inArlington, TX.

I received an obituary for Gay Bowens Felts, who was born in Albany, GA, in November 1945. I believe she left Albany before 1961. She is not in our class. Perhaps someone will recognize her name and submit her class to Albany High Times.

~ Bruce Garey (’63)

My high school graduation Class was 1962, Turner County High in Ashburn; but I attended school in Albany from 1st grade through 6th. I kept in touch with many Albany friends through high school sports and later as Regional Vice President for Storer Cable out of Sarasota, FL at the time we purchased the Albany system from James Gray.

We lived at 1705 North Slappey, where the Taco Bell is now located from 1949 - 1954, then moved to the country not far from the airport.Jeanna Stewart was a neighbor who was into horses, so all of our early "courting" was riding our horses around a 5 mile circle near our homes. She was nice enough to be my date for the Junior - Senior prom held at Radium Springs when I couldn't find a date from Ashburn.

I attended Palmyra for four years, McIntosh for 5th grade, then Magnolia for 6th. I was enrolled at Albany Jr. High but we moved before the fall began in Sept of '56.

Other Albany pals included Ronnie Whifield Billy Smith and Steve Bacon, all class of '62 and my best pal David Wolfe from the Class of '61. David died young while serving in the Air Force boot camp in 1970. You may have known one or both of David's sisters. Their father was Dr. Wolfe head of the County Health Department where we all received our polio vaccinations.

The Rose

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower
And you, its only seed

It's the heart, afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose
