The Albany High Times' "NEWS & CLUES"!!!

We look back....we look forward!!!

. . .  just a small town in South Georgia that grew the best kids ever raised!!

Memorial Day is a good time to reflect on the sacrifices and services of the American soldiers and veterans and the U.S. military men and women. The American military is, has always been and will always recruit the best and finest of the crop of young men and women of the country and we will continue to shower them with appreciation, support and prayers, as we have always done. Memorial Day is just an opportunity for us to express the special places they have in the hearts of American citizens and more by honoring the people who work in the various branches of the military.  ~ Unknown

Many Thanks to AHTimes Sponsors

for June 2015 - May 2016!

This website grew out of a plan to start a website for the Class of 1955 (first class to graduate from new Residence Avenue building), but soon many other classes showed interest, so  instead The Albany High Times was created for all classes!

For nearly 14 years, the website has connected classmates in a wonderful way, and YOU who have volunteered to be Sponsors for the past year are a part of making that happen!!!!  Thank you!

Alumni Weekend!

July 29 - 31, 2016

Hello!  I wanted to let as many AHS Alum as possible know that we are working on putting an
all class reunion together this year.

We need everyone's input. Your voices mattered ... as you paved the way for the "slightly younger" classes like mine ... 2006!

There was a meeting at the school in the new auditorium on Tuesday April 13th at 5 pm.  The tentative dates for the reunion are July 29- 31, 2016, and we also plan to celebrate this year at AHS Homecoming ... which is scheduled for September 24, 2016.
Please spread the word and consider joining us!
We need to support our school to ensure that
it stays ...
... as great as it once was!

55th Reunion

May 5 - 6, 2017

Paul Wallace has graciously offered his yard and home for our event again. No other plans have been made at this time. If you have any input or want to be part of the planning please contact Jonnie Holley Douglas (jonnieholleydaouglas@gmail.com), Eleanor Banks Simpson (ysam04@mchsi.com) or me.

We will set another time to meet in the fall.

60th Reunion

May 5 - 6, 2017

Class of '57 Reunion Committee has met and begun work on our 60th reunion! It will take place on the weekend of May 5th and 6th, 2017, and the venue for both nights will be Merry Acres.

We would like for our class members to e-mail their e-mail addresses as well as their mailing addresses to us, and if there are some who haven't quite figured out the computer/internet workings yet, they could call either Mariellen or me. Merry Acres Motel has "blocked out" some rooms for us which can be accessed by calling them at 229.435.7721, and telling the reservation clerk that they are attending the Class of '57 Reunion. By providing this much advance notice, it allows our classmates to go ahead and put a 2nd or 3rd mortgage on their home to pay for the face lift, tummy tuck, toupee and dental implants. We haven't had a reunion since our 50th in 2007, which by all accounts was the best AHS Reunion ever had….Ray Ragsdale Stevens entertained us Friday night at a grand piano with a medley of his many songs, and then on Saturday night we danced to the music of a 16 piece orchestra that he brought down at his expense from Nashville. Albany had never seen nor heard a band like this one…they played all the songs from our era and sounded as good as if not better than the original artists.

Michael Hefton ...

Outstanding AHS Class of 2017 Student

submitted by

Elizabeth Champion, Class of 1963

One fine young man AHS Class of 2017 is Michael Hefton. Although he visited grandparents near our school, it was not until loss of his grandmother a few years after his dad died, that he came to live in Albany. His entire family assists Michael’s grandfather, a beloved Palmyra Heights neighbor.

Michael’s Indian Spirit is similar to decades ago. He followed his brother Zach [AHS class of 2014] already living with his grandparents and attending AHS. Zach played music in AHS lobby sometimes. Fights, drugs, and arrests were more frequent than adjacent Soccer or other sports seen around now. But imagine the peaceful difference having nice music played live in school lobby after lockdown. [If Zach is working at Radium Springs he cannot allow anyone (even AHS grads) to swim as the spring itself is left to flow naturally.]

Lanky blond, baseball loving, very responsible Michael joined his brother as an “Indian” Fall 1973. He immediately went out for baseball which was barely active then. Now Junior Class President, he enrolled at Albany Tech, he is a winning pitcher for AHS Baseball team (a rarity lately). He helps with ‘AHS Spirit Nights’ at Football games and other projects.

Michael runs a business. Beginning at Buntin/Barton yard on 3rd Ave, he now has 70 customers and often hires help. He is especially busy during baseball season spending time at Eames [in East Albany] plus other surrounding county ball parks.

Both WALB-TV and FOX-31 interviewed Michael after he pitched AHS’s first winning game in a quite a while. AHS baseball coach told reporters Michael was talented as catcher, 1st and 2nd base, and pitcher (not at same time). This modest, amazing Indian has #7 on his baseball uniform in honor of his late father (not AHS student).

Michael’s elementary school brother, Levi, is his part time employee. Levi was ‘Student of the Month’ among his other awards at Northside Elementary School. [Note: Palmyra School has not been DCSS owned for decades. Albany Middle School has been in East Albany since Phoebe bought historic AHS> AJHS> AMS complex on Jefferson St. some years back].

On Residence Ave, the faded Indian head illustrated sign near front entrance just got a bright new coat of Orange & Green.

The AHS Cafeteria has been demolished and in its place a new improved one is in construction.

Orange & Green picnic tables east of auditorium add a park like setting; but DCSS custodial staff hopes cafeteria is quickly completed. Lunches are brought in same as other schools they say.

Inside, Mills Stadium is nicely landscaped and is busy most of year. It is especially busy in Spring with track meets of both girls and boys, local and statewide.

So now you know a little about DCSS & AHS in 2016.

Email from Charlotte Nix Burnfin

Class of 1968

I have not communicated with the Albany High Times over the years but do read it and also am friends with several former classmates on FB.

I am not sure if I am approaching this in the proper way, but I wanted to try to spread the word about our farm in Lafayette, GA (Walker County).

My husband (Ray) and I will be married 46 years this year on June 27th. We lived the first 20 years in the Metro Atlanta area in Lithonia, GA and raised out 2 sons (Neil and Ryan) there. We relocated to Lafayette, GA in 1992 and have made this our home since then. We have approximately 120 acres located at the base of Pigeon Mountain. Duck Creek runs through our property.

We are in the process of developing a venue for Christian/family focused activities here at Bluebird Hollow Farm. We are still in the beginning stages and have a long way to go to have what we feel is a completed vision. I would like to invite my AHS former classmates and alumni to view the web site for just a glimpse of what we have here. Our contact information is listed on the web site and we would also invite communication from AHS alumni. We have not had much activity over the last couple of years but we have had several gospel singings with local gospel quartets and hosted a program with The Chuck Wagon Gang. We have also hosted the local Chattanooga Barbershop Chorus at our barn facility.

I don't get to Albany very often since my dad and mom moved out of the area to Iron City, GA, but I do still have friends and family that live locally in the Albany area. My dad just celebrated his 90th birthday but I lost my mom several years ago and now have a wonderful stepmother who is great support for my dad. They have a fish pond and mini-farm in Colquitt, GA. They have a sign on the main highway advertising the Nix Fish Pond. They have mainly catfish. You fish and pay for what you catch by the pound. They furnish the bait (worms) which they raise. I would invite anyone who loves this type outdoor activity to contact them and make a visit. If you would like their contact information I would be glad to provide that if you would contact me.

I am still employed as a medical transcriptionist, working from home, for a large national company but am working toward retirement as soon as possible in order to focus on our visionary project here at Bluebird Hollow Farm.

Our web site is www.bluebirdhollowfarm.com

Thank you for the work that is put into the Albany High Times and hopefully I will be able to attend some of the activities in the future.

God Bless,
Charlotte Nix Burnfin, Class of 1968

Albany High School Coach/Teacher 1955 - 1966

A Message from ...

by Paul Lockard AHS '62

Sometimes in life you are given that rare opportunity to "PAYBACK " by "PAYING FORWARD "

This is that time!!!!

Alumni of Albany High School are coming together to establish a Scholarship in Coach Graham Lowe's HONOR. Why would we want to do this? After all he has an Athletic Building named after him. The answer is, a scholarship is a living investment in many students, which will allow them to accomplish goals, have experiences and develop a future that they may never have imagined.  Very simply this is to HONOR a man and his family, who has for over 40 years, impacted so many of us. This is our chance to give back in his HONOR!

We are establishing an Endowment through Deerfield -Windsor School for these reasons:

 1) AHS could not accommodate it

2) Coach was the Headmaster there for many years

3) It's tax deductible

4) It will exist in perpetuity ( forever ) and allow continuous donations and

5) The fund will not have to bear the cost of establishing a 501 (c) 3.

The Short Term Goal is $10,000

How can you be a part of this OPPORTUNITY?  Simply email or call Paul Lockard (AHS 62 ) giving me your PLEDGE AMOUNT.  At that time I will give the necessary information for where you will send your donation.

Email is: 66bubba@att.net

Phone: 601-381-1038

Let's do this !!!!

NOTE: Paul Lockard started the Eagle Fund for the Corps of Cadets at University of North Georgia where approximately $300,000 was raised, and $64,500 in Scholarships were given in 4 1/2 years.  In the beginning, The Fund included 5 class years, and is now adding one Class each year.   Paul is now Chairman Emeritus, and was selected a Distinguished Alumni in 2013.

Ladd King, Class of 1962

Albany High School is saying "thank you" to teachers

By Shannon Wiggins, Reporter

Albany High planned several activities for "Teacher Appreciation Week,” including a breakfast, lunch, and a drawing for free meals at a restaurant. They're also putting surprise treats in teacher's mailboxes. Monday’s treat was school supplies.
Officials say it's a small token of their appreciation.

"There's nothing that I could put in the teacher's box or gift that has done the things that these teachers have done for children,” said Jill Addison, Albany High School Assistant Principal. “It's almost like they are their own. They take them and sometimes they're staying after school just for one of these students. So we just want to make sure that they know that we appreciate them.”

Something else teachers will really appreciate, Governor Nathan Deal signed a new budget that includes raises for teachers.

~ Submitted by Bruce Garey, Class of 1963

***    Each time I read something of Suhayl Rafeedie, Class of 1956, in the High Times, I think of how much mother, Wilda Slappey Pryor, Class of 1933, thought of him. She always mentioned what a nice boy he was. I thought he would like to know that she liked him and that he was doing well and impressing his teachers when he was in the eighth grade.
Thanks for all you do.

~ Judy Pryor Hoxie Class of 1958

***  I just visited your site and saw that my name is among those missing for the Class of 1953. My name is Peggy Joyce Thompson and I currently live in Oceanside, California.

I married shortly before graduation and left to join my husband in England immediately after graduation. He was in the Airforce and was sent to England which triggered a hurried marriage so that I could join him as soon as I graduated.

I hope all is well with my classmates.

Peggy Thompson, Class of 1953

*** Thanks to Sunny Rackley ('53) for the photos of the old classrooms. I’m 79 & graduated from AHS in ’54 & the penmanship was the same when I was in grammar school. It’s a shame we don’t see that anymore. Thoroughly enjoyed the pictures!

~ Peggy Jo Irwin Davis ‘54

*** AWESOME !!! Great discovery ! Thanks for sending this.
~ Pat Dean, Class of 1948

***  It is almost impossible to think this lasted all those years and the penmanship is so beautiful. I wish mine was half as good.

Thanks all the work you do keeping us up with The Albany Times.
~ Jo Anne Johnston O'Quinn, Class of 1952

*** My husband, John Sherman, Class of ’63 is no longer receiving his News and Clues. Could he please be put back on the mailing list?

Thank you, and thank you for doing a wonderful job.

~ Marian Chambless Sherman, Class of ‘63

NOTE:  I hate it when that happens ... but from time to time it has a miind of its own.  Thanks for letting me know! ~ BSH

***  Special thanks to Bruce Garey ('63) for the many times he sends information  regarding AHS Indians ... not just from his Class of 1963!
~ Beverly Smith Herrington ('55)

*** Note from a missing AHS classmate:

Gail McDaniel Luckey, Class of 1964

BBA from University of Texas, San Antonio

Married Sam Luckey Class of 1961(deceased)

Retired in Columbia, SC

*** Thanks so much for the video of my classmate (Jo Wright Hughes) husband’s military funeral. I agree with your message, Beverly, accompanying the video. My deepest sympathy to Jo & her family. How proud we were classmates of Jo.

*** Graham Lowe – My homeroom teacher all three years at AHS. The bane of smokers in the first floor east men’s restroom. He could smell a cigarette being lit from his desk.  They seldom got a second drag before Coach had them on the way to Mr. Mack’s office.

Of course, for those who could wait until lunch, there was “the tree” on the west end of the campus. It was pretty well ignored by all staff. They turned a “blind eye.”
