50th Class Reunion

These two classes shared a huge "together" 50th Reunion celebration last November 2014, but clearly by recent comments and pictures on FaceBook, the Class of 1965 still remembered their graduation date in June 2015, with warm hearts!!!

*** Class of 1960***

55th Class Reunion

The Class of 1960 is always ready for get-togethers in between their "5" and "10" years; this year they gathered early in May 2015 to celebrate their 55th Reunion.

*** Class of 1955 ***

60th Class Reunion

The Class of 1955 was the first class to graduate from the new AHS building on Residence.  They were also the first to hold the ceremony in the new auditorium, although many were sad they didn't get to walk down "the hill" at Mills Memorial Stadium.

TO OUR AHS 1955 Classmates

Well here it is!!!  Our “Sixtieth” has rolled around!! Yes! 60 years since June 6, 1955, the night of our long anticipated graduation! Could it be so many years since we left our A.H.S.??!!

But think about it … surely, we had it all!  Boys in duck tails, dirty bucks and dungarees, rushing to get metal lockers unlocked, down-stairs, up-stairs, into their class seats just as the tardy bell rang.

And when teachers turned their backs or looked down into their books, pony-tailed and “poodle-coifed” girls in loafers or saddle oxfords, circular skirts with many, many, many crinolines, not to mention those trendy off-the-shoulder blouses … passed notes about their "steadies", about "breaking-up"; then feigned innocent faces, hoping not to get caught.

On Friday nights we "cheer, cheered for All-benny High" as our Indians did the best they could to make us proud! We ordered Black Cows at "The Royal", saw movies at the Albany Theatre, then made a run to the "Pig & Whistle" before taking off to find a "parking place" saving just enough time to make it home, running up to the front door just as the clock struck 11" ...

Comparatively speaking, life was "virginic" in those days ... no school bathrooms filled with cigarette smoke, not a whole lot of drinking going on,  oh just a little "petting" here and there, and drugs?  Surely they were mostly rumors!  Our worries were few ... we just didn't know it at the time

Then there were the girls who wore football jackets of the “hunks on the field” with great pride!  And some guys impressed with Model A's, and an occasional girl was lucky enough to drive to school in a brand new convertible (top down)!   We loved to cruise Slappey with best friends on nights right after a bad break-up, on the lookout for new loves.

We learned the PCB "Dirty Bop" and practiced “those moves” at Radium's Pavilion, and so what if the girls wore their Rose Marie and Catalina bathing suits, never giving a thought to a cover-up?  We slow-danced to Nat King Cole, who tried to tell us we were "Too Young" and Tony Bennett ... who told us our lives were " ... now worth living” and that we could “smile because of ..." our someone special!  Oh how our hearts melted ... well okay … the girl's hearts melted!

So much has happened since 1955.  We are cumulatively grayer and/or balder: but we've aged like fine wine. You say some of us are wrinkled, or wider? … well it just doesn't matter.  We've got "treasures of memories" because of those years ... back then when we belonged to each other!

Surely “Those were the days, my friends … we thought they’d never end” … so go the words penned by someone who knew and understood our times! Yet tonight, my friends, we must also remember what we've lost ... 91 of our classmates ... and in just the last five years, we’ve lost 28 … some were closest friends ... some we never really knew.  They are gone now, but they remain forever a part of whom we became and who we are!"

Blessed with memories of our classmates and our teachers, we remember the times of our lives, and the great reward of those relationships and friendships ... immeasurable gifts!

So, together, let's lift our glasses to toast the memories of our deceased classmates … to those incredible teachers who taught us life … to each classmate here tonight, and especially to those who were unable to join us.  We are all rich with such a bounty of gifts … from our friendships, from lessons learned, and from all those who singularly … touched our lives!

? ~  I stumbled across a link to "Vintage Albany" in the March issue of Albany High Times' "News & Clues". There was a link to Tarver Plantation -- where I used to live. The nostalgia almost knocked me out of my chair. While there, I wrote a "First Person" paragraph regarding the Plantation.

It showed a photo montage, which I have been chasing. It shows some older photos; presumably Tarver Family. There are recent pictures of the house as it is from a recent remodeling. Also pictures of the main pond, and older pics from when my family owned it and I lived there.

Now, I have a gigantic favor to ask. I would love to have a copy of that link. Many of the newer pictures are ones I do not have. Some of the newer ones, since the remodel, I never had. I would so love to share with my daughter in CO, who has only seen the home and the lakes a few times. And, my granddaughter, who has never seen it.   Will you forward my request and e-mail address to Betty Rehberg? Or, will you (can you) share her e-mail with me and I will ask her?

Heap big Albany Indian THANKS!

Go 'Noles!

Just can't get away from this Indian karma...

~ Johnny Boesch, Class of '57

A~  Johnny ... this is what happened ... I had not seen the Tarver Plantation link.  Here's why: every month I post the following suggestion from Betty Rehberg:

"Those of you who only access Vintage Albany with mobile devices are missing out on a LOT of content. We have a huge photo section, videos and many files and links that cannot be accessed without a PC.

~ Betty Rehberg (’74)"

So ... the features you see on the Vintage Albany Georgia link in March ... may not be featured in June, etc.  Johnny Boesch, you opened a personal gold mine when you decided to click the link in March!

The Rest of the Story ... Betty Rehberg directed Johnny back to the Tarver Plantation section ... and if you are a member, you can see what he saw here:

*** Thanks for Albany High Times ... keeping us all together and feeling we are still young and walking those creaking halls of AHS.

~ Bill Huggins ('47)

*** I didn't think I was ever going to get to be a Sponsor. The list was always full by the time I noticed the request. There is no way we can all express our gratitude for you doing this.

Also, I loved the Memorial Day message from your husband, Tom Herrington ('56) that was on Facebook.

~ Wanda Olivent Proctor ('61)

*** Please change my email address. Thank you.

~ Mike Cumbie, AHS Class of '73

*** I sometimes wonder if the Class of '60 is unique in its innovations such as the “News and Clues” and its willingness to support it and our class members.

Funny, I feel more a part of the class now than I did as a student. Who knew?

~ Sandi Thrower Nichols ('60)

NOTE: I agree ... that does happen. Our reunion was not divided into groups this time ... we all seemed to be one! And people we never really knew at AHS ... have now become friends!  It was a very special reunion - perhaps because we realized our good fortune to be together, when so many can no longer be with us.

*** I really love the Times---keeps me in touch with HOME-------keep up good work---thanks again---- ~ ~ Helen Percilla Barnhardt ('44)

*** Please change my email address.

~ Trisha Fowler Brooks ('62)

*** Just a note to thank you for your continued detailed work on the Albany High Times. You have done a wonderful job in creating a very professional web site and I thoroughly reading it ... enables me to stay abreast of the happenings and most importantly keeping up with old friends.

*** Anyone still wishing to order "Memories of the 1964-65 2015 Albany High Bash" ... please contact me by leaving a message with your
name, year you graduated, address and telephone number on my telephone (I do not get email).  I will send the package with my return address on so you can send me a check for $25 for a DVD and an 8 x 10 picture of your class. I would like to close this out soon. Thank you so much.

I was fishing for Bream today and I caught one of these, It was only the second Red Ear I have caught on Table Rock Lake. Mine only weighed 1 1/2 pounds just a mere light weight compared to the monster this fisherman landed.
