* Girls' Christmas Luncheon *

Our next luncheon will be

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

in Gray, GA

Dorothy King Combs has graciously invited us to enjoy her beautifully decorated home in December.  She loves everything Christmas and decorates every room in the house!

We had a good group on September 17 at my home. The conversation never stopped and a slide show of past luncheons was available for viewing.

Watch for an invitation to the December luncheon by email in late November.

*** Notice that most of the cars seen here on Daytona Beach are Chevys'.  No rice burners in site!  Also notice the band shell in the distance. ... Ray Ragsdale ('57) Stevens, Bill Garrison ('56), Terry Coleman ('56), and yours truly Bob Duggleby ('56) played there one summer!

***  Last night Margaret and I went to a local play house to see Singing in the Rain. It was a wonderful production.  Today, I pulled the original Gene Kelly rendition up on YouTube. I had forgotten how wonderful it was.  Remember the times when movies were not rated PG, PG 13, G, R or whatever?  Times were good then! Watch and enjoy!

The following email was sent to one of our Albany High Times' staff members.

? ~  I am writing because I am attempting to locate my birth mother and possibly other family members.

I was born in 1962 at Phoebe Putney.  I saw on the Albany High Times' site that you are the '60s and '70s liaison.  I thought that maybe my birth mother may have gone to Albany High and it may possibly be a way to find her.  I was born April 30, 1962.  I have a memory of the name "Wills" but not much else.

I am seeking them, or info (especially medical), because I am having medical issues. I have a son who is 23, and I need to find my medical history.

I am not seeking anything other than that. That is the MOST important. If anything else can come from it, then let it be. Just taking a chance.

Thanks for the time to read this.

~ James Drury - jdru317@zoho.com

NOTE:  Several years ago, the Albany High Times was able to help a young husband find his wife's father. She talked with him for the first time that Christmas morning.

The Alpha Tri-Hi-Y played a Big Role in the lives of many young Indian girls ...

While going through a box of things "mama" saved over the years, I came across this article on the Alpha Tri Hi Y in The Albany Herald dated December 12, 1953 (my 18th birthday).  Interesting.........................

Albany Indians

Plan Book Signing for

1962 Classmate's

Newly Released Book

Albany High School Indians Spencer Lee and David Campbell, with the help of other Albanians, have arranged book signings in memory of their AHS friend, Hamilton Jordan, who was close to the book's completion before his untimely death May 20, 2008.  The book, A Boy From Georgia (Coming of Age in the Segregated South) was recently edited and completed by members of his family.

The events are as follows:

Book signing by Kathleen Jordan

October 22nd | 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Albany Museum of Art

311 Meadowlark Drive, Albany, GA

*Hors d'œuvres and cash bar*

Book signing by Kathleen Jordan

October 23rd | 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Albany Civil Rights Institute

326 Whitney Avenue, Albany, GA

NOTE:  Reading at 12:00 noon followed by a Q&A session

*A light lunch will be provided*

Kathleen Jordan is the daughter of Hamilton Jordan, AHS Class of 1962.  She is a television producer and writer living in Los Angeles.

Ms. Jordan writes, “My dad had been working on this book for a few years, and it was not finished when he died.  He left my brothers, my mom and me with this manuscript, to which we have made as few edits as possible in an effort to preserve the integrity of the work. At the time of his death, he did not know that we would go on to finish this book; we didn’t either. It would make him happy to know that you’re reading it.”

If you are unable to attend and wish to

obtain a signed book/books, please contact Hamilton Jordan books at 229.888.0013 or slee817@aol.com.

You may also order online at www.aboyfromgeorgia.com

From the Daughter of

Daniel James Stevens "Dan" Class of 1954

My dad entered the USAF in 1955 and served with The Thunderbirds the west coast version of the Blue Angels as a mechanic. Dad was too near sighted to make pilot. Although it was his dream to pilot, he was able to serve in a unit that he loved.

He went on to become a world renowned Model Airplane designer and builder. One of his more famous planes was a scale B-29 bomber was 20 feet and 100+ lbs that launched a Bell X-1 rocket mid air.

Dad and his partner, Mac Hodges, flew in Air shows across the country.

My dad succumbed to cancer September 2, 2008.  Ironically the same B-29 crashed during the first exhibition flight without Daddy in Hendersonville, KY eleven days after Dad's death.

We lost Mom in January.
~ Dani Stevens Tippins, AHS Class of 1978

 Tribe Notes …

*** Thanks for all you do with the “Times”. It reminds me of the wonderful times we had in Albany.

Can you give help me with contact information for a classmate?

I served in the Marine Corps from 1961 to 1964.

Does Don Braswell still live next to you?

I am Jimmy Phillip’s ('55) brother, Bubba. My legal name is Mabry Stone Phillips. Jr.  Our dad had Golden Glow Dairy.  Thanks again,

~ Bubba Phillips ('56)

*** GREAT article on Covenant Presbyterian Church!

~ Nancy Reimer ('75)

*** Thank you so much for the beautiful article about Covenant's  60th Anniversary.  Thank you for being with us.  I would appreciate it if you would send me the pic of the group. Thanks again.

~ Ruby Tomlinson Pickron ('50)

*** The "News & Clues" means so much to us since we live in Jacksonville. We can keep up with what's going on.

Enjoyed the article about Covenant Presbyterian Church's 60th celebration. Sonny and I were charter members of that church. I had been a member of First Presbyterian from 1946 until 1955 and he joined after we were married. I was even in the choir when James Barnett was the organist.  When one of the choir members died, she had asked James to play "The Hallelujah Chorus" at her funeral. As we left the choir loft, we could hear him playing it so stately.

~ Betty Dunn Logan ('49)

*** My counselor said my forte was bookkeeping. The day after graduation I started work at the C&S Bank (don't know if it is still there) as a bookkeeper.

Over the years I had various secretarial jobs across the country from Arlington, VA, Kansas City, MO, and Camp Pendleton, CA. I then went into budget and finance in China Lake, CA and transferred to Panama City Beach, FL to NCSC where I retired as Budget Officer and Deputy Comptroller.  It was a great career.

Maybe the AHS career counselor was on to something!

~ Peggy Robinson Ptacnik ('55)

***  One of Tony Cushenberry’s sons is a pilot for the First Lady's plane!!!!!

It’s also a shame that our class of ’52 doesn’t offer some info…..
~ Annelle Stem Griffin ('52)

*** I love the "News & Clues".

~ Sara Cox Kofoed, Class of 1958

*** This is to notify of my move back to Shreveport, Louisiana to be near my children and grands. Will send a new email address when I obtain one. I continue to enjoy AHS news and clues each month and am so grateful to you for keeping on, keeping on with it.

~ Ducky Jones '53

*** I appreciate ALL you do for the "Indians" in keeping us informed across the globe.  We spent a week in Branson and just missed seeing Ray (Ragsdale) Stevens a few weeks before.  We saw him perform at the Sydney Opera House when we lived in Australia, and I ducked "backstage" before he went on and spoke briefly with him, and reminisced a bit!

~ Embree Bolton ('58)

*** Many thanks for all your hard work. We love keeping in touch with AHS & Albany through the Times.  Cheers,

~ Richard ('48) & Jetta Simpson

*** Walter Autry was in Class of 1966.  Sad to hear we have lost another classmate.

~ Dudley Weir ('66)

*** So sorry to hear of Walter Autry's passing.

Bill Lightle, Author and Educator

* Class of 1975 *

Bill Lightle's latest book, Dead River, just released, is his first novel.  It tells the timely and thrilling story of the environmental destruction of the Flint River in Georgia, and the secrets behind it. Dead River follows the trail of two young newspaper reporters, Abby Sinclair and John Maynard, who have been assigned to the story. They could never have imagined the danger that would confront them as they get caught between people who are trying to preserve the river's natural beauty and powerful forces out to destroy it.
