The First Singing Christmas Tree?

Beverly Smith Herrington

Class of 1955

First Senior Class in the new AHS Building

As I sit here, putting together the December “News & Clues” (more than a bit late) while sipping Mayfield Eggnog, best there is according to Richard (Gooch) Harper, ’54, laced with nutmeg – but NOT laced with Syllabub … and I’m thinking of past Christmases at AHS! One in particular comes to mind …. The 1954-55 Albany High School Glee Club, under the direction of Maynard Sell presented the first “Singing Christmas Tree” in the auditorium of the “new AHS building! It was the first one anyone in Albany, GA had ever seen! Now was Maynard ahead of the times … OR WHAT? It was a big hit! And by the way ... if you have no clue what SYLLABUB is … you weren't listening ... and too bad you can’t ask Billy Bragg … oh the teachers we had … we were blessed!

Messages from FaceBook!!

Sometimes I get so frustrated with FaceBook – I could scream! But then something good happens like "meeting up" with Ben Bailey … Class of 1952, and a senior my freshman year! I was so impressed with his FB profile picture with his wife, I asked if I could post on our “US Now” webpage at http://albanyhightimes.com/us_now.htm

* Visit this webpage and see other posted Indian pictures. Send yours if you wish … IN JPEG! Newspaper print does not make good pics because of pixels.

*** Ben Bailey posted on a timeline

"Beverly, thank you! My wife’s name is Verneda. I never stopped to think how many couples married that did not go to school together. The only girls I remember dating more than once at Albany High were Jo Wright and Faye Mcfee. They were so good to me I believe they felt sorry for me and just wanted to help me out."

Spring Release of a New Book

To Dance with the Devil's Daughter: God's Restoration of the Rev. Grady Caldwell

Albany High School Class of 1967

Dr. J. Robert White, Executive Director Georgia Baptist Convention writes in the Foreward: "The story of Grady Lee Caldwell, Jr. is revealed with remarkable candor in this inspiring book. From a young boy growing up in Albany, Georgia, during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, to remarkable leadership as the first African American football player at Albany High School, and one of only three in the state of Georgia, Grady's story will touch your heart."

Caldwell writes, "As a 1967 AHS graduate I am pleased to announce that this Spring a book is being released about how God's amazing grace and love transformed my life after years of drug addiction and incarceration. The book is called: To Dance with the Devil's Daughter: God's Restoration of the Rev. Grady Caldwell. I want to let all my brothers and sisters in Christ be aware of this book in the hopes it will help other people in need (like I was for many years) of healing. I co-authored the book with Georgia writer Bill Lightle, Class of 1975."

Senior Pastor Daniel Simmons of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia, said this about the book: "To Dance with the Devil's Daughter is a must read for all men who desire to be courageous men. The book tells the honest account of Grady's bold journey toward God's purpose for his life. His story will draw you in because in some way his story parallels with all our lives."

Caldwell is Senior Pastor at New Mercy Baptist Church, Griffin, Georgia.

*** The Virtual Sistine Chapel ... the Art of Michelangelo ... Here is an amazing bit of technology you would NEVER see alone in person. It is ALWAYS VERY CROWDED in the room, plus you can't see Michelangelo's artwork close up as you can virtually. This is especially spectacular if you have a large high-definition screen in full screen mode.

Here you can STUDY EVERY PART OF THE MICHAEL ANGELO'S MASTERPIECE UP CLOSE & PERSONAL!

JUST "LEFT CLICK & DRAG" YOUR MOUSE ARROW IN THE DIRECTION YOU WISH TO SEE. In the lower left, click on the plus (+) to move closer, on the minus (-) to move away. Choir is thrown in free.

This virtual tour of the Sistine Chapel is incredible. Apparently done by Villanova at the request of the Vatican.

Enjoy the Michelangelo's Art and a bit of Rome on your computer. Amazing what can be done with the new technology! Click here: Sistine Chapel

~ Chester Green (‘33)

*** Around here we have a rule. One person stays in the kitchen by the sink, while the other one goes out into another room, and tries to do something. When that person gives up because he/she cannot remember what it was that he/she was supposed to be trying to do, he/she returns to the kitchen to tag the other person, who then leaves to try to do same...

We chose the kitchen as "home base" because most of the time, that's where the food is... so here’s a new song made up just for us 'old guys' ..........

*** PLEASE ... All information or requests must be sent to albanyhightimes@aol.com.

Please include your full name AND class year. You will save me a bundle of time. No way I can remember to whom over 2,000 email addresses belong, and at 75 it's not going to get better ... you know it's true!

*** Radium Springs Gardens is located at 2501 Radium Springs Rd., Albany, GA 31705. That's from the 1994 Albany City Directory, which is a great information tool about pre-flood Albany.

~ Martha LeSueur Nicholson (’56)

*** I wrote Eloise King Newton (’61) for joining the “50th Wedding Anniversary for the first time, and received this response … "Thanks Beverly. Great job on the "News and Clues" publication. Have been reading the Doug Dahlgren books listed last month. Good reads and thought provoking. Now to Henry Duggin's book. Just started it"!

~ Beverly Smith Herrington ('55)

*** In the 09 2012 edition of News & Clues, you wrote: Somebody had a lot of fun with this. Most of the people in the clip were deceased before the Bee Gee's recorded "Stayin' Alive." Whether you are a Bee Gee's or Rita Hayworth fan or not...you are going to love this! It shows one thing and that is the music may change, but the moves are timeless. A great job of putting clips together with the music. Click this link: Click here: Rita Hayworth Is Stayin' Alive - YouTube
~ Ernest Sutton (’61)

*** I thought I sent our anniversary announcement, but it didn't get in the recent Albany High Times. I got a notice that it was undeliverable. I think the problem is the return address for anniversaries is albanyhightims@aol.com without the "e" in Times.
Thanks for all you do

~ Betty

Betty: you are the only one to have caught that particular typo … Mrs. Long Cordell would not be pleased with me (smile). Have resolved the mistake, and your announcement was published in the November edition - now in the Archives Click here: 11 2012 News & Clues!

*** Wow! Did I have some fun looking at 5 or 6 2-hour Bee Gees shows on my 50" TV.

Here's how I did it! On a laptop computer with HDMI connections, I went to this address Rita Hayworth Is Stayin' Alive - YouTube

Then I click on the BGs pictures in the top right corner of the screen. When a show came up, I connected the HDMI cable from my computer to the TV and changed to mode to HDMI. One of the BG shows have Dion as guest. Thank you Ernest Sutton.

~ Robert H Doan ('44)

*** A few days ago, I was looking at some old pictures of myself and my Mother, Mary Ann Cornwell Greene, who passed away December 29, 1960. I was about 3 or 4, with a little hat on that kept flapping down in my face, so she took the offending floppy brim and held it up with her fingers.

Mother was a redhead so she wore a big straw hat to protect her face from getting any more freckles. Daddy, James E Greene, Jr, who passed on January 23, 1966, took that picture with both of us in those hats and smiling like all getout. It was taken near the old slide (at Radium) and always seemed too high, and took forever to climb. The coldness of the water hitting you for the first time you slid down it each summer will never be forgotten. That's the Radium Springs I'm going to remember. Not that ugly water hole I just saw Click here: Dirty Dozen List: Fouling Georgia's water - WALB.com, Albany News, Weather, Sports#.UKQO3xRYltw.email )

~ Ellen Fox Greene Haydon, Class of 1962

NOTE from BSH: Ellen, your comments are the only ones I decided to publish from the many I received ... and although there were many wonderful memories, as well as sad comments like "its like reading an obituary", some of the Indians kinda squared off with opinions of WHY this happened to our "8th Wonder of the World" and all did not agree. Radium was the reason for starting the Albany High Times 10 years ago ... and it then evolved into something much bigger ... so I will honor Radium and the Casino any time I can. But publish disagrements? Nope ...

*** Thanks for another great "News & Clues"!

Pat Rose Duggan (’63)

*** Please change my email address. Thank you, in advance.

~ Bobby Erkhart (’58)

*** Thank you for sending the Albanyhightimes. Please note that my e-mail address has changed.

Also for your information, I would have graduated from Albany High in 1943 but I did not go back for my senior year because I left school, lied about my age and joined the Navy. Thanks again for keeping me on the list.

~ William ("Billy") Langford - Dothan, AL

NOTE: Thank you, Billy, for your service to our country. Just so you know and remember … once an Indian ALWAYS AN INDIAN!

*** Just wanted to let you know that my niece, Brenda (Rouse) Haas passed away. I'm not sure of her class, but was 60 years old. I'm assuming the class of 68, 69 or 70. Here is her obit from the Herald. Thanks,

~ Dan Lipsey (56)

*** Brenda Rouse was Class of '70. So sorry to hear.

~ Gloria Beecher Edge, Class of 1970

*** Ed Rouse, brother of Brenda Rouse, was Class of 1966.

~ margaret g brannan, Class of 1966

*** Barbara Tillis's maiden name is Barker.

~ Eleanor Banks Class of '62

*** Her maiden name is Barbara Ann Barker

~ Barbara Anderson Robinson (’62)

*** I saw an obit in today's Albany Herald for Wayne (Bulldog) Hammond. He was living in Altamont, TN.

I remember when he was a police officer, but then had a great life change and became a Church of Christ minister. He was ministering at the Tracy Church of Christ.

I remember him as a great lineman for the AHS Indians, but not so good in the classrom. My favorite memory of him, and I hope he won't mind my sharing this, was when we were in a sophomre (I think) English class and were studying the story of Silas Marner, the miser who hid his gold in a swamp. After Marner's death, those looking for his gold decided to drain the swamp.

Mrs. Boatwright, the teacher, asked Wayne why did people drain the swamp. Bulldog, in all seriousness, replied "to get the water out."

Wayne was my age (76) and was in the class of 1954 with me.

Thanks for all you do

~ Paul McCorvey

*** Thanks for Wayne's obituary! I haven't checked them out for a while. Used to go about once a month and look thru them but sort of fell out of the habit.

I remember him well! We didn't have much in common but had a few classes together in high school, and he seemed like a nice person. By the way, that was a sensible answer to the question in Mrs. Boatwright's English class! Perhaps he failed to read the assignment or was thinking about football during the discussion in class.....lol ! It was true after all if you only look at it one way!

~ Frieda Howard Randles(’54)

*** I remember Bulldog. I always think of the famous (although storied) detective by the name of Bulldog Drummond when I hear/heard his name.

~ George Albritton (’55)

*** Please add Betty Ann Brown (1930-1988) Class of 1948 to your Memoriam. It meant the world to her to get back to Albany for the 40th class reunion prior to her death.

She visited with so many people who were special to her from Albany High. She loved sharing pictures and names of people that we all grew up hearing.

Have some pictures of her classmates and would be glad to share. One is labeled Billy Lacklin and Edward Jones?? Shows the guys in front of the school.

Thank you again for keeping Albany's history.

~ Ann M. Hall, daughter

*** My brother, Robert Lee "Bobby" Ruffin, Jr., died in May, 2002, in Huntsville, Alabama. He was in the 1948 AHS class. I noticed that his name does not appear in the 1948 list.

My sister, Ruth Margaret Ruffin (47), is listed in the 1947 roll. She died in January, 2002.

Thanks for adding Bob's name, and thanks for keeping the website going and the newsletters coming.
~ Anne Ruffin Folsom (56)

*** In this morning's Chattanooga Times Free Press obituaries, there was one for Edwin Wayne Hammond (76) who passed away November 12th in Altamont. The article states that he was born in Albany on Sept. 28, 1936 and played football for Albany High School, earning the nickname, "Bulldog Hammond." According to the article, he earned a full football scholarship to play for Georgia. I am not sure when he would have graduated from A.H.S.; the obit did not say, and I moved to Albany after he would have graduated.

~ Joanne Simmons Smith (Class of '58)

*** Dennis Posey, Class of 1955 died about a week ago, and Dot Bridges Staines, wife of Roy Staines, died sometime during last night. Dot was in the Class of 1956. Don’t know any details yet but will let you know..

~ Brinson Phillips ('54)

*** What an awesome long life for Mary Fitzgerald Taylor, a great lady! She was featured in Southwest GA Living magazine last year in an article on living younger longer. Her first husband, Harvey Fitzgerald, worked with my Daddy at the Central of GA railroad.

~ Martha LeSueur Nicholson ('56)
