~ Ana Lois Kingsley Green ~

Class of 1929

Mother has had a small stroke, and is in rehab at Mt. Pleasant Manor.  The Dr. asked her how she felt, and she said, "Fine .... but if the Lord is ready for me to go I'm ready to go; but I would like to stay around a little longer"!  She is waiting on the Rapture!!!!  She will be in a nursing home from now on, rather than assisted living.

Mother was born December 15, 1911 in Albany.  She graduated in the AHS Class of 1929.  Sister Loretta, Class of 1950, lives in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

? ~  I'm searching for William David Taylor, Class of 1964, listed in the November issue of the News & Clues as a Armed Services member. I think he is a distant relative of mine! I would like to find out whatever information you have on him or how to contact him. Thanks,

~ Joe Ed Henderson* (’57)

P.S. I dropped the Ed when I left Albany in 1958 to join the Navy.

~ Joe

Response: Thank you sooo much for forwarding this email to me.  Joe Ed Henderson is a distant cousin and I look forward to getting in touch with him. Merry Christmas!!!

~ William David Taylor (’64)

Followup: I heard from David an hour or so ago! Yes we are cousins and he is probably the last relative I have left there?

Maybe I'll run across someone else by reading the Times News!

Thanks so much! I'll keep on trying to be an Albany High Times’ sponsor which is hard to do … sounds like you get a lot of responses to that. Take care!

~ Joe Henderson (’57)

? ~  From time to time brother Jeff (Crawford) and I ask each other about people, incidents or places in Albany 'back in the day'.  He usually wins with his great memory.

The other day Jeff came up with one of which I only have a vague memory. There was a store/shop - Jeff says on Pine - that steam-cleaned hats. Who today would believe someone could actually make a living, especially in a SOWEGA town of 40K, doing that? Surely they must have also sold hats or maybe it was part of a dry cleaners.  I suppose I was always more interested in the Rialto pool hall.

By the way, one day I came home and as I went through the living room, noticed that my Mother had some of her lady friends visiting. She asked where I'd been and I, thinking nothing of it, replied that I'd been shooting pool at the Rialto. Later that day my Dad got me off to one side and said that was the absolute worst thing I could have said. He said I could have said I'd been to a whore house and been better off.

Seems early in their marriage, he'd gotten in trouble with her by having a few at some pool hall. With her, pool halls were EVIL!

But I got off the hatters topic. Do any of you remember the hatters shop?

~ Jon Crawford (’54)

Class of 1981

by Martha LeSueur

Did you know there was an Albany High Indian helping coach the the winningest team in Georgia high school football?

On Saturday night, December 12, 2015, in the GA Dome in Atlanta, the Colquitt Co. Packers became the first team in the state in more than a decade to post consecutive perfect seasons as they repeated, as AAAAAA championsto beat the Roswell High Hornets 30-13. They have now won 30 games with no losses.

We knew this team as the Packers of Moultrie High School back in the ‘50s, and they were a formidable team to beat then.  Danny Blaylock (’81), former quarterback of the Albany High Indians, is one of the coaches of the Packers varsity team and head coach of the 9th grade team at Colquitt Co. High School, as the school is called now. With this win, the Packers are the No. 2 high school football team in the nation.

Congratulations, Danny, to you, all the coaches, and your team on a job well done.

Danny is the brother of Bonnie Blaylock Ussery (’73) and Beth Blaylock Rouse (’83).

AHS Teacher

***     She (Helen Long Cordell) was not only a Great Teacher but A Great Lady as well.

~ Gloria Branan Beaudet

***    Mrs. Cordell taught me shorthand and typing at Albany High School. She was the best. She also was instrumental in my accepting Jesus as my Savior. One day she said to me "don't you think it is time for you to get saved"? I thought about it and did the right thing. She was a sweet caring Lady.

I might add that I graduated from Albany High School in 1952 (Earl Dean Branan). That's a Loooonnnnggg time ago. I visited Mrs Cordell many times over the years.  Deanie Branan Chesser

 Tribe Notes …

*** Sending you my research on this one... My wife, Shawn Nelson Hall, Class of 1981, was "best friends" with Loretta Hatcher, Class of 1981 (deceased), during high school at Albany High. All I know is that Loretta and her stepdaughter were killed in a car crash in Dougherty County on or about 3/26/1997. I believe we located her grave a long while back in or around Perry, GA. I asked someone at The Albany Herald to locate an obituary for us. They did forward it to me.

I found a beautiful website memorial for (her stepdaughter) Erica Lovell, but nothing for Loretta.

~ Joe Hall, Class of 1982

*** Both my Dad, Roy Erwin Shultz and my Uncle, Norman Shultz  attended and graduated from AHS. They are both recently deceased.

I noticed my Uncle Norman Shultz’s name “In Memoriam” Class of 1939. They both graduated in 1939.

The stories of the grand times they spent at Albany High are precious. When my Dad was inducted in to the Albany Georgia’s 2003 Sports Hall of Fame, I had the joy of speaking to the Athletic Director at the school to share a few of Roy’s stories. She was very pleasant to speak with.

They would both be honored to know that they are being recognized as Albany High School Alumni.

See the Hall of Fame article on Roy’s induction: Click here: Memories of the 1930's

~ Jerry Shultz, son

*** Had a great visit with John Huie (’56) and his wife, Jan in Albany last week.

~ Fred Sumpter (’56)

*** Please add to the list of AHS members of the U.S. Armed Forces that of David C. Akridge, Class of '55. Thank you very much.

~ Jenny Thompson Higginson (’58)

*** Please add two of my brothers' names to those who served in the military.

They are: George B. Mock, Jr., Class of 1946 and Thomas W. Mock (deceased), Class of 1953 Thanks for all you do.

~ Anita Mock Hudgens, Class of 1964

*** Though I moved away from Albany after 6 years at Highland and my first two six-weeks in 7th grade at McIntosh, I still consider myself an Indian, and would have been a member of Class of 1964. I served in Vietnam in 1970-71 as a combat weatherman, USAF, attached to the 101st Airborne.

I enjoy the Albany High Times website. Thanks for the good work.

~ Jimmy Taylor, Class of 1964

***  Gerald Albert Chancey was a Junior in the 1942 annual so I presume he was in the Class of 1943. You probably already have this but I just found it.

~ Connie Thomas Pinkston (’50)

*** Read in this morning's Albany Herald & learned that one of my old friends (died on 11/17/15) that many of you know or remember: Jimmy Fallaw.

Jimmy & I were in the same class at AHS, both went to 1st Methodist; he was one of my agents when I was in management with Lincoln National Life. In retirement, he worked with many who were trying to recover from addictions, and volunteered much of his time at both the Anchorage & Graceway.

Please pray for Jimmy and all those he left with us.

~ Julian Whiting (’58)

*** I did not have Mrs. Long for a teacher, but I remember her mainly because she came after me & a friend when we decided to skip BTU! How she found out we were there, we never knew, but she scolded our butts back to First Baptist!

What a great lady whom the Lord saw fit to give an extended life

~ Peggy Jo Irwin Davis ‘54

*** Just a note to let you know that Helen Long Cordell, age 103, died today.

~ Julian Whiting, Class of 1958

***  We All just LOVED her…………

~ Annelle Stem Griffin, (‘52)

*** What a wonderful and sweet lady. She lived a full and interesting life. She is now certainly in good hands
~ Karl Heinzman (’55)

*** A special lady. May she rest in Peace.

~ Tom Robinson (’61)

*** I deeply appreciate Mrs. Long Cordell’s notice. She was such a dear person to many of us.

In Memoriam ...
Not where I breathe,
but where I loved ... I live ...

Helen Myers Long Cordell

AHS Teacher Extraordinaire

March 18, 1912 - November 23, 2015

… My heart often hurt for the beautiful, genteel Helen Myers Long, whose subject I thought a waste of my precious time. We had heard stories that her life's "love" was tragically taken from her early in their marriage; but I noticed … she always seemed to look ahead, never backward. She was an excellent typing teacher, and toward the autumn of her life, she found a new love, Joe Cordell. Who would have ever known that one day I would be alone (though for different reasons), and that the skills she taught would enable me to support myself for many years? To this day I look to her as my role model, hoping that perhaps someday, a very special love will happen for me as well!

~ Beverly Smith Herrington (written for the Class of 1955's 30th Reunion)

***  Helen Long Cordell, beloved AHS Business Education teacher

*** Roy Erwin Shultz, Class of 1939

***James “Jim” E. Fallaw, Sr, Class of 1958

*** Melvin Eugene "Strip" Stripling, Sr., Class of 1955

***  Betty A. Parker Smith, Class of 1958

*** Loretta Hatcher Lovell, Class of 1981

*** James Flood Paulk, Class of 1954; brother of Johnny ('54) and Virginia Paulk

Note: Thanks to all who send notices and/or obituaries of AHS Indians inside and outside of Albany. We may not otherwise be aware of our losses.
FYI: Email notices and/or obituaries are first sent to the deceased’s class, and if relatives are Indians, to the classes of the spouse, child, or parents, as soon as possible.   Each is then listed in the Albany High Times' "News & Clues", and also on the Albany High Times "In Memoriam" webpage: In Memoriam - Our Deceased Classmates - AHS Albany GA

Please send corrections or additions to

I was wondering if there was a chance of requesting people send any pics they might have from the Maude Evelyn Murphy Dance Studio to me for the 70th Anniversary?
